New player, who should I get to progress smoothly, and still be good long term?

I’m kind of new (I’m on chapter 2) coming from other gachas, I lost my 50/50 already (is Keqing good?), and right now I have a full 4 star team, from quick research I know alot of the upcoming people are good, but idk if there is a catch to them like they need someone else. So if someone could let me know who to get because I’m sure I can guarentee at least 1 person, that’d be amazing. Just someone who would make things easier and be a good investment, as I’ve made some non meta mistakes on HSR before 😭

Since you are on guarantee, the Zibai banner could be useful for you. Its good to have at least one lunar team and zibai has a full team on her banner. You can also improve it later by getting columbina on her rerun.

Zibai's gonna be your best bet to get into the meta, as someone else has already mentioned. Her banner actually probably one of the best banners for beginners in a long time. Keqing has been pretty garbage so don't bother with her, just focus on prepping for zibai. Try to get Illuga (Upcoming 4star on her banner) constellations if you can, they drastically raise her dps level.

although this is just my opinion, but getting columbinas really nice, or ineffa! you can never go wrong with supports, oh and zibais banner is up in a few days too, i hear she's kinda easy to use, ntm the fact that her 4* banner lineup is already such a good team that you can get for her, so if you want a team that you can take with you till endgame, thats the way to go strategically, i think :>

Tbh the best for you right now is a Natlan Character. I started when chasca was out, and after I pulled everything from exploration to combat hella smooth. I would if it's possible you should get chasca or mavuika or varesa. These are the best for exploration and overall combat. But you should go for what you like. But you can also build the standard 4 stars like zinqiu(sorry for the spelling), xiangling, fischl and bennet. Best of luck for your journey.

Zibai won't be good for a beginner rn because Lunar Crystalize scales off character level and it will be a long time before you get characters to LV 80/90. I don't think Neuvilette is beginner friendly either and he wants Furina. I would suggest keep trying for Columbina because she enables all the Lunar reactions so you have flexibility with team building with four stars. And if you can't get her then skip the upcoming banners and wait for Varka or Mauvika.

If you want to progress "smoothly", Keqing is actually very good. She is upgraded with material from Liyue, van help with exploration, works well with dendro traveller which everyone have. She'll fell off a cliff in end game, but by then you should have better characters available. Not to mention many character that works with her like Fischl, Yao Yao, even Xingqiu...are versatile to use in many other teams. I suggest building her since you'll need some power now.
For your long term plan, as other said, Zibai is good and her whole team is on the same banner. However, she and everyone else in her banner will be a massive pain to upgrade. Her ascension material boss is way over in Nodkrai and the boss for her talent upgrade is pretty tricky. Being a new character - and a strong one at that, she's pretty much ahead of the power creep (for now).
And then there is Neuvillet, he kind of in the middle. The man had been pushed out of the end game meta for a while now and his best team mate is not available in this banner. However when it comes to "progression": Neuvillet is very independent. Even without his best team, he will slaughter your way through the game by himself, farm any bosses for you at ease. And in my opinion, he is actually very useful in Imperium Theatre with is an end game mode that favor versatility over raw damage output.
Tldr: use keqing now, pull Zibai for long term investment, or Neuvilete in between.
