Why the hate??
Well, I always knew what this Guensin Impact thing was, but I don't have much time to waste, so I choose carefully where I'm going to have fun. Before starting this game, I asked a lot of people, and I also looked for many comments on YouTube to see if it was worth starting, if it was a good game, and 90% of the comments were:
"If you want to lose your sanity, yes"
"This game is crap"
"Spend your time on something more useful"
So for years this kept me away. Finally, I'm on vacation from college and I don't have any pending studies, so I came to test it after all these years and, look, with 17 hours of gameplay I'm having a lot of fun, there's a lot of content, I haven't spent anything yet. I don't know if I was lucky that I got a 5-star character called Ineffa, but I'm not even using it because I'm not finding the game difficult. Why did they say so many bad things? Doesn't the game community like the game? Or is it really going to become a piece of junk in the future?

The same people that gamble away their wages on counter strike lootboxes also say you shouldn’t play Genshin because of the gacha mechanics.
In the end just form your own opinion, I went in sceptical at launch mostly due to the Zelda allegations but I’m still playing to this day and having a blast.
The game started with arguably very little content all things considered in its first year. Monstadt is pretty barren place to explore considering the other areas.
Sumeru was awful with all of the underground exploration and absolutely no map for it. I'm not sure when that got added in, but it makes playing the game so much more bearable in those areas.
Rain used to be literally impossible to climb walls without causing you to slide down and they got rid of that and I'm very glad they did. The endgame content was much less as well. You had Abyss and that was it. Now, we have the wonderlands, stygian, teapot, imaginitum theater, and the TCG.
The tools for exploration got better as well. There used to not be any treasure chest compass or culus compass. I took a break after Sumeru for 2 years, the story quality imo really improved from Fontaine onwards.
I will love to go through Natlan/Fontaine/Nod Krai now compared to the earlier versions. There are fewer and fewer puzzles which force me to swap out my teams. It was super annoying changing out characters for bow and specific elemental usage all the time.
There is also gacha tribalism which runs deep in some places.
Certain groups have grown hostile towards it for certain things big or small and due to nature of the game, got excessively emotional about it.
As long as you are mindful of the gacha stuff the game is good. Have fun.
Yeah, the community does like the game, otherwise they wouldn't play it. There are issues with the game and they need to be discussed so they can be fixed, but if they wouldn't like the game, these issues wouldn't be discussed in the first place.
Also, though the devs said they plan to keep the Genshin IP going for at least the next decade or so (in whatever form that may be), even if they stay true to their word, yes, eventually every game will eventually shut down, it is inevitable. Eventually, the money and time I have spent on this game will disappear into the aether as the servers go down, but that's not what matters. What matters is the fun you had before that. And it's your call on whether that is worth it in the moment, not some years in the future.
Is this the perfect game? Heck no. Does it have flaw? Yes. But the important thing is, all of these contents the game offers to u, do u have fun with the experiece? And thats the answer that only u can find.
I've been playing the game since launch and while there are things I wish could be improved on, its already vastly different and perhaps even better game than it was when it released. But ofc many refuse to acknowledge any changes if it doesn't serve their agenda or fit their fan demands.
Genshin got really popular during 2020 so it got a lot of attention from a wide audience. People often hate what’s popular but Genshin is a great live service game. It has good exploration, combat, and story
The gacha factor is predatory but you can play completely F2P, it just takes longer and more planning to get the characters you want
Ineffa is great too, one of the best characters right now. Columbina who is on the banner too is great alongside her
Have fun!
Others are just ex-players with a victim mentality that somehow the game scammed them.
People love to hate popular things to act like they are different and pretending they are better (like Edgy teenagers)
Nefiri? White. Who is she? An EGYPTIAN goddess.
Anubis? White. They call him herminubis or whatever a mix of Hermes and Anubis.
The entirety of Natlan. There's non white npcs here and there sure but the playable characters? All white. Except one character and she's ashy black and a 4 star.
Sumeru Characters. Non desert dwellers are supposed to be tanner then that while the dessert dwellers are supposed to be darker then what they were made to be.
Hoyoverse can make them have melanin because they do it with npcs, but they chose not to and it's frustrating. Even the enemies are more dark skinned then the playable characters.
Ineffa is good. You might not need her in the Overworld now, you'll probably want to use her in the endgame modes.
Hope you have fun!
Oh man.
Would love to hear your edited review 200 hours from now when you apologize for sounding so naive, lol.
People have different opinions, people like and dislike different things, it's human nature and is why we use our own judgement instead of letting others decide for us.
I'll let a mobile games CEO explain it:

You're in the hook phase of the game.
The game is lavishing rewards on you so that you make a habit out of logging in every day to play a while.
The amount of content isn't just Mihoyo being awesome either. If you fast forward to ~16:30 in that same video, they straight up say: Whales take longer to convert ("convert" in games monetization terms just means going from a free player to a paying player), so make sure you have plenty of content.
> Or is it really going to become a piece of junk in the future?
Genshin is a single player PvE game.
The problem with that is that single player, PvE experiences take a hell of a lot longer to create than they take to consume. Even a major patch only contains 15-20 hours of content at best. If you have an hour or two per day of gaming time, maybe 4-5 hours on a weekend, you can get through a major patch worth of content in a week or two - never mind the filler patches.
However, the game is still a live service. Even if there's no new content, the game still needs you to log in and engage with it every day. To accomplish that, like most other gacha games, Genshin is full of mechanics designed to force you to constantly engage with the game whether you want it or not.
If you want new characters, you'll have to log in every day to engage with daily quests and events to farm for free pulls - especially after the permanent sources you're using during the hook phase of the game are tapped out. To build characters, you'll have to log in every day to use resin.
Once you hit the "habit" and "hobby" parts of the monetization process, your interaction with the game just mostly ends up being grinding to get characters, then grinding to upgrade them, interspersed with stories written to sell you more characters.
This subreddit loves to praise Genshin for being different from and uniquely better than other gacha games, but it really isn't. It just has more modern, flashier presentation. It has the same fundamental structure as every other gacha game.
It loses badly for 90% of players. The way the F2P model works is, the F2Ps are there mostly to be content for the whales, and the whales generate so much revenue it's worth more in the end than if every single user paid a fair price for the game.
> I just want to enjoy the story and the map
The story and open world are both clearly warped around selling characters. You might not mind it, but it's absolutely still there.
> I come from MMO RPGs, and I always play with only one class because I hate switching characters
> In Genshin, in the hours I've played, I already have more than 8 characters.
Speaking from a purely gameplay perspective, you should think of characters in a gacha game less as "characters", and more as "swappable skill packs", where you need a full set (aka team) of skills in order to do content.
In a typical MMO, you're given new skills naturally as you level up, and all content is designed with the skills you have available in mind.
Gacha games don't naturally give you more skills the more you play, and content is most definitely designed to require new "skills", whether you decide to get them or not.
For reference, basic field elite enemies in the newest regions have far more HP and attack than even the weekly bosses (generally the strongest class of enemies) in the original regions, and that's not considering the gimmicks that the mobs have, which are specifically designed to advantage the newest "skills".
Open world can still be cleared regardless what you pulled for, but it can turn into a pretty major slog. Endgame is also (mostly) clearable without getting all of the lastest meta characters, but the difficulty can spike pretty dramatically.
