Okay, look at the name of the quest/puzzle. Then type in “Genshin (name of quest/puzzle) Sumeru desert” and click on the results. There should be several. Game8 has most, there are usually at least a few YouTube videos, and often it just takes a few glances before it clicks in your brain and you can solve.

So the game actually explains the mechanics, when the time has come. So I think that it's a type of puzzle that involves a certain type of mechanic that is to be unlocked by a world quest. There are several in Sumeru.
For example some rainforest stuff can only be solved as part of the Aranara line. In the desert there is some stuff that needs you to unlock a stone slate, it's a King Deshret related quest, did that start at Katherine? And then there's plenty of other stuff in the north west with map markers...
So whatever you are talking about, it's rather sure that you need a quest line for it.
