Fun Fact! The English localisation uses a slipper, but the Chinese original uses 藤条 (téng tiáo), which is a rattan cane. It's thin and strikes quick, often for disciplining children.

Sa_notaman_tha2026-02-02 16:16
this is actually an accurate localization, the slipper/flip-flop is the common tool for beating children where calling for a switch or a cane seems old-fashioned in a way Gaming doesn't mean it to
Y_10HK292026-02-02 17:33
a bit tangent but why not a belt?
ILuvHuTaoAndNagatoro2026-02-02 17:42
That's what i got my ass whooped with as a kid.
Can never go wrong with a belt.
Organicities2026-02-02 18:19
Maybe the belt is too realistic and traumatizing. Whereas getting hit with a slipper carries more comedic meaning
99cent-tea2026-02-02 18:24
Why take your belt off when you can snap some bamboo off the side of the road or from your backyard
It’s also a cultural thing, kids get belts in the west while we get wooden canes/bamboo in the east because that’s what *their* parent whipped em with, shit they found in the yard
Mtebalanazy2026-02-02 16:17
We have similar thing in my country
GaustVidroii2026-02-02 16:18

Boysenberry01272026-02-02 16:52
When going shopping with parents you go shop for rotan hahah
idevilledeggs2026-02-02 17:21
I remember my parents asking me to pick the cane they'll hit me with. A rather cruel and unusual punishment lol
Rlap02026-02-02 16:58
SINGAPORE MENTIONED?! MAJULAH SINGAPURA!
Wonderful-Lab73752026-02-02 17:17
I still remember getting rattan caned on the hand for stuff. Hurts like hell…
I remember how some of my peers tried to find ways to make it hurt less, like using glue sticks or something lol. Idk if it ever worked since I never tried it.
Y_10HK292026-02-02 17:33
the secret to rotans is to choose the bigger ones since due to some weird physics bs, they hurt less than the thin ones
Draconic_Legends2026-02-02 17:59
I still remember my teachers asking us to cover our veins....
SF-UberMan2026-02-02 18:27

Killer_Klee2026-02-02 16:28
"Daddy's belt" would have worked too.

My mother was partial to a good wooden hairbrush. Those things were brutal
Lad_of_the_Lake2026-02-02 16:59
Auspiciously beaten within an inch of my life for not practicing my cultivation fr
GettingWokeUp2026-02-02 17:01
That sounds terrible are you okay?
alvenestthol2026-02-02 17:13
In case this isn't part of the joke, cultivation is Chinese-flavoured term for what is basically "leveling up" in fiction, and "Auspicious" is all over badly translated Chinese stuff because, well, r/itsalwaysfu
forcebubble2026-02-02 17:08
Asian moms would grab the closest thing they can get, be it a rattan stick or slipper.

Dude, in Spanish he says 'una chancla'. Almost died laughing.
Kittykg2026-02-02 18:11
Should be *la* chancla.
Not because their choice was wrong, but we must emphasize. Fear la chancla.

Depends on how you do it, my parents hardly touched me with a cane and just preferred telling us off. If only we really like seriously messed up after numerous warnings they bring out the cane and give like 2 or 3 strokes at worse six. With the side punishment of kneeling and raising your arms for a specific duration.
It takes self control to discipline someone and not all parents have that.
Jnliew2026-02-02 17:42
Mine were closer to yours though slightly more trigger happy, but damn have I seen and experienced insane teachers. I remember being 10-12, and seeing a classmate getting caned 30-40 times in total every week felt completely senseless violence, like clearly it's not working.
Rosei-Pop2026-02-02 17:51
I hated those teachers, like atp they are just doing it out of pure wickedness. And there are other ways to correct someone without resorting to a beating first, usually the cane is kept as a last resort.
And worst of all that kid gets desensitized to the point they don't care.💀
So like what was the point of it all?
Jnliew2026-02-02 17:58
"desensitized to the point they don't care"
I have no idea how she ended up after primary school, but at the time that was exactly the case, completely desensitized
She kept skipping homework, compulsive liar, and she kept getting caned
Surprisingly decent grades though, I don't know how she did it
My secondary school actually banned caning the year I started/the year before, the most black pilling thing was being in a class reunion a few years back and being the only one against caning children as a practice
They all quoted the usual "kids/teens too unrowdy/soft" when we were all not caned at all in secondary school and ended up doing pretty well
Like what the hell...
ILuvHuTaoAndNagatoro2026-02-02 17:45
Hard disagree.
Half of the problem's with modern society could be solved if we brought back ass whoopings.
There is a right way and a wrong way to do it though.
pdmt2432026-02-02 17:53
you look at the kids online nowadays (especially in the West), clearly they need more ass whoopings
Comfortable_Shape8852026-02-02 18:15
well I mean i got choked quite a few times, soooo....
Semyon2026-02-02 16:44
southern us you're in trouble if you're told to go get a switch
ILuvHuTaoAndNagatoro2026-02-02 17:43
If you're lucky enough they'll even let you go out and pick which one you want to get whipped with.

Prisma_Lane2026-02-02 16:49
Damn, a rattan cane? That's like some PTSD for asian kids in the 2000's.
KrimsonKurse2026-02-02 16:53
We call it a "switch." Rattan, bamboo, etc. Any light and easy to swing stick that can be swung quickly for maximum sting.
Rosei-Pop2026-02-02 16:59
Flash backs mehn.😭
Almost became a victim this morning for sleeping too long.
We have a similar thing in my country but we call it koboko.

Outside for beating kids, rattan cane is commonly used to beat your bed (usually the one with [kapok filling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapok_fibre)) while sun drying it.

ProudFill2026-02-02 17:20
Thanks I was wondering how it was translated in English. As someone from Gaming's cultural inspiration i laughed my ass off at this one.
Zaine_Raye2026-02-02 17:41
Lmao they translated "traditional Chinese punishment" into "Asian parent in America punishment" and did so brilliantly.
Draconic_Legends2026-02-02 17:59
Ok his dad actually impressive if he can throw that godforsaken cane hard enough
TheScalieDragon2026-02-02 18:11
Sooo Ei's slipper can be canon
Aninhamery2026-02-02 18:25
Yep, I too got beat up by slippers when I was young, I felt you Gaming, let's cry together
